um, yeah, uh-huh, sure. like i said, tarkovsky is someone i respect. and there are tons of beautiful moments in the film, particularly the last moments with little man and the tree (interestingly enough, it's been pointed out that tarkovsky's last film ends with a tree, just as his first feature begins with one). but i just can't say i like it. tarkovsky's films are for the most part on the opposite side of the spectrum of films that i like.
it took me three nights to get through this. the first night it was getting late, and i had to get to bed. the second night, it was getting interesting, but i was dead tired and tarkovsky's films are not something you want to watch if you are dead tired. i had to stop and go to sleep. same thing tonight; i had to stop and take nap. man, three times in three nights i had to sleep while watching this film. but after tonight's nap, i finally got through it.
and talk about hard to get, he has to threaten to blow his brains out to get what he wants. what kind of sacrifice is that? there are lot of guys who'd be willing to make that kind of sacrifice. and can you blame little man for jumping him at the beginning? who the heck wants to hear someone talk about that kind of stuff? especially a little kid. way to go little man! you know how to shut him up.
oh yeah, there's that bit about nuclear war and stuff |
