A short, or medium length film, depending on who you ask, with godard interviewing allen. As a fan of woody, I liked it. Woody’s thoughts on cinema give some insight to his films.

What godard did with the footage was interesting, making something as ordinary as an interview into something all his own; there was no doubt that godard intended to make it his film in his way.

i didn’t figure out everything that godard was trying to express with his technique in this short, but i liked a lot of it. i like how woody allen is in the background and godard is in the corner foreground—the director and his subject in their respective positions in the shot. i like the sudden cut to intertitles. how about when godard throws a slightly absurd question at woody, especially in godard’s slightly fluent english or translated from his french, and woody, out of respect, tries to give a straight forward response (i.e. being to close, distancewise, as one watches television). the superimposition of stills onto the live action interview footage is very symbolic of some kind of statement/judgement godard is making.

my favorite shot is the one of godard smoking cigar in tight close-up and his facial expression is sort of judgmental of woody allen as we hear woody talking off-screen—i got a good chuckle out of that one.

godard seems to be having fun making and showing us this short, and it shows in the playful technique as the the interview/meeting unfolds.
