similar to zodiac, in so much as you have a film about a serial killer SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER that is never caught END SPOILER END SPOILR END SPOILER and also based on a true events, supposedly
but thats about it. actually, to compare this to zodiac would be wrong. there is no comparison. the only reason i watched this is because i want to watch his films with bae doona, and this is a lot more readily available than those films. so i just wanted to know if this guy was talented, or would i just be watching barking dogs and the host simply for bae doona. well, based on this film, he's got potential. theres a brilliant sequence where he milks the suspense for all hes got (im talking about the scene of the first murder that is actually depcited on screen, not the ones that happened off screen). that was well done. the rest of this film, ok lang. entertaining. but for now, the reason why ill take a look at barking dogs and the host is not because of the director, but because of bae doona.
ok, im gonna make the comparison to zodiac because i think its necessary to show why this film is not as good as it can be. first of all, zodiac has a much darker feel to it, which is necessary (its about a serial killer after all). this film has it at times, but in other moments that feeling is not there. part of the reason is the look of the films, and if you watch both films, perhaps you'll know what im taling about. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER the interrogation scenes also are laughable, but in a bad way. they just took away from the film, i felt. with zodiac, you see how the lives of the people are affected by the killer. and that transition is clearly depicted. however, in this film, that transition is not clear, and so it feels uneven. i mean, you have the good cop who won't resort to evil tactics, and then the next minute he's flipping out ready to become a vigilante. no transition at all. not that the transition is necessary, but if you dont have that transition, then you better figure out a way to make that 180 degree turn work, and this director did not. END SPOILER END SPOILER END SPOILER
i hope bong joon-ho does a better job in his other films. but like i said, its entertaining and is an ok film, but in the end, i wont remember it.
