million dollar baby (clint eastwood, 2004) [Dec. 10th, 2006|03:12 pm]

i remember i was in the philippines when i heard that this film won for best picture at the oscars. and i was like, i've never even heard of this film. so i continue reading about eastwood's W at the oscars and the article gives a big fat juicy spoiler. i hate that. because this is a film that makes you think its about one thing, and then it turns out its about another thing. but in a way im grateful for that spoiler, because knowing ahead of time what the film is about helped me prepare for it. sometimes a film can suddenly twist on you, so radically that its hard to get back on track. i remember seeing fight club on opening night (in columbia at least), and SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER when they reveal that norton and pitt's character are the same person, it was really one hell of a jolt. so much so, that i thought it was kind of cheesy that it was part of the plot, and for the rest of the film, that night at least, i kept thinking how cheesy it was to have that in the story...its not like its an original idea. i could have sworn ive seen it in a few comic books before END SPOILER END SPOILER END SPOILER anyway, consequent viewings of fight club had me prepared for this twist, and as a result, i am now able to enjoy fight club because i know already what is going to happen. in fact, id put fight club in my top 10 of the 90s (along with another fincher flick, se7en. id say fincher is in my top 10 directors of the 90s, while im at it).

im glad that i had that spoiler about million dollar baby, because i probably would have felt cheated by the film with the big change in the story line. knowing ahead of time what the twist was allowed me to enjoy the film as it is, so that i wouldnt be pre-occupied thinking about the twist after it occurred.

im not much of a clint eastwood aficionado. ive seen pale rider (which sucked), midnight in the garden of good and evil (the first spacey film that i thought sucked, and which, coincidentally, made me think that he's beginning to be in only sucky movies, before then i thought wow, he's in se7en, american beauty, the negotiator, but since watching midnight, every movie that ive seen spacey i thought has suked), a perfect world (sucks also), mystic river (ok), unforgiven (its been a while since ive seen it, but i liked it when i saw it), and now this (which i like). this isnt by no means a great film. but its good. ive got a copy of jose wales, but i havent gotten around to viewing it. also, i've borrowed bird from the library, so i'll be watching that at some point this week. but for now, id say i like this the most out of the  films of his that ive seen.
