maybe im being too nostalgic, but se7en has got to be the greatest film about serial killers. this was ok, but is nothing compared to se7en. first of all, it just seems to polished, i mean, the look of it is too clean. on the dvd, there is this alternate opening sequence to h, and it has this second generation vhs tape look to it. and that was the way the rest of this film should of looked. and honestly, that opening sequence should have been in the film.
there's one sequence in the film that is just right on. kang's on the beach and his two fellow officers arrive. it's the moment that the officers get out of the car and approach kang. then there are just some beautiful visuals. too bad the rest of the film isnt like that.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER how many times are we gonna see a serial killer in a film act like hannibal lector? i think the first imitator i saw was in con air. now this. and that female cop. she was a little tooooo smooth for this film, if you know what i mean. i mean, for real, no one is that calm and pensive like her. a bit over doing it i would say. and kang, when he's revealed as the killer, and he's in his hypnotic state, that was really over acting END SPOILER END SPOILER END SPOILER
i will say that the twist in the film is clever SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER not the fact that he was hypnotized, but the way he was hypnotized. the thing is, you don't pay attention to it, because that hannibal wannabe is so over-acting, that his hypnosis is all but forgotten. an unintended benefit from the poor performance. END SPOILER END SPOILER END SPOILER
this is the second film that i've seen where the dvd/vhs box specifically says it's just like se7en. the other one was tell me something. its been a while since i saw that, but at the time i thought it sucked, and this was much better than that. being the fool that i am, i always fall into those kind of marketing ploys: "se7en meets silence of the lambs". i remember buying the complete yakuza papers set in the hopes of it being the "japanese godfather". hardly. now that was one of the most disappointing purchases in my life. but i deserve it for being so gullible.
