i've heard linklater described as someone in the vein of rohmer. my reaction to this is, yeah, he's like rohmer with an american twist. but after seeing this film, i would also agree that bujalski is a poor man's rohmer, as he has recently been called.

with the recent release of mutual appreciation, and after reading such a description of bujalski, i decided to give this film a second chance (the first time i tried to watch it, i had to stop as i was not in the mood to tackle this kind of film).

a lot of mundane aspects of the film, but that's what makes it different than most others. really, that's what makes it endearing. it goes at a deliberate pace, but its not torture slow like tarkovsky, hhh, tsai ming-liang. actually, there's plenty of dialogue.

after i graduated from college, i didnt know what to do myself. i was just floating around. and while this film may not resonate with others, i think the experience of the character is something which people can relate to.

there's a slacker feel from the film that i get. and interestingly enough, the lead could pass as a sister of stephen malkmus. speaking of which, i hung out with a lot of people like the characters in this film. and a big aspect of our lives was music. but in this film, whether due to financial constraints, aesthetics or whatever, music is a hardly noticeable factor in the film. not that music is necessary; i just found it odd that the characters in the film did not have a greater concern for music than what was actually portrayed. its probably better off this way, because if music had a bigger presence in this film, it would have been completely different film

SPOILER SPOILER
bujalski said that he wanted the film to end when it needed to, regardless of whether or not there was resolution. considering how this film ends, he certainly stood by his beliefs
END SPOILER END SPOILER

and i think this is the perfect title for this film.
